As the owner and operator of Habibi Funk Records—a German label that specializes in reissuing Arabic music from the ‘70s and ‘80s—Stuertz had seen his share of ancient and decaying recordings. But the tapes Kamal Keila gave him after he’d traveled to Sudan were in particularly bad shape.
