GLIAL FIBRILLARY ACIDIC PROTEIN, abbreviated GFAP, was one of the first delevloped antibodies and is a common immunostain used in neuropathology. It's expression is associated with glial differentiation, especially with astrocytes.
GFAP, mainly in α‐isoform, is the major component of cytoskeleton and the scaffold of astrocytes, which is essential for the maintenance of astrocytic structure and shape. GFAP also has highly morphological plasticity because of its quick changes in assembling and polymerizing states in response to environmental challenges.

Abcam offers quality products including antibodies, assays and other reagents. 2014-10-15 GFAP, a class-III intermediate filament, is a cell-specific marker that, during the development of the central nervous s ystem, distinguishes astrocytes from other glial cells. show less: Disease involvement i However, since GFAP is not only expressed by mature astrocytes but also by radial glia during development and neural stem cells in the adult brain, we hypothesized that GFAP expression in astrocytoma might not be a direct indication of glial differentiation and a less malignant phenotype. GFAP is expressed in the central nervous system in astrocyte cells.

Reactive astrocytes with an increased expression of intermediate filament (IF) proteins Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) and Vimentin (VIM) surround amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The functional consequences of this upregulation are unclear. To identify molecular pathways coupled to IF regulation in reactive astrocytes, and to GFAP is the major structural protein of the glial intermediate filament of astrocytes and its level in CSF increases in association with astrocytosis. GFAP was first isolated from chronic MS plaques, which have a high concentration of fibrous astrocytes ( Eng, 1985 ). The glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a glial-specific intermediate filament protein, which is expressed in astrocytes in the central nervous system, as well as in astrocytoma cell lines. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an intermediate-fila- ment protein expressed abundantly and almost exclusively in astrocytes of the CNS. We are studying transcriptional regulation of the GFAP gene to gain insight into astrocyte function and also to develop an astrocyte-specific expres- GFAP, he stresses, "is the most abundant protein in astrocytes, and we already knew it's altered in nearly all neurological conditions.
